The other day I crossed the street and noticed a very prominent sign announcing the sidewalk ahead was closed. While I enjoy my routines and generally never waver from my daily path, I obeyed the sign and took alternative route.
A young couple in front of me blatantly ignored the sign and used the sidewalk. Our paths crossed again a block later at exactly the same time—my detour took me out of my way routine but not out of my way. The couple could have followed me without getting off their schedule. The closed sidewalk and subsequent detour were not inconveniences.
The couple was heading north and I was heading east. As they walked away I stared at them in disbelief. I was trying to fathom how they could disregard the “closed” sign and use the sidewalk.
I understand they didn’t break a law. They didn’t get hurt; they didn’t interfere with the construction; they didn’t impose on the workers; if fact they probably went unnoticed. I just can’t understand why someone would blatantly disregard a sign’s simple request.
Maybe it’s because I’m old that I follow directions. Maybe it’s because they’re young they rebelled against authority. I just think disobeying a sign intended to keep you safe is an act of impertinence not defiance.
