Eight Belles

Derby day. While I don’t follow horse racing as closely as I should, I always watch the Kentucky Derby. Who won? Who cares! The real story is second place finisher Eight Belles who was euthanized after suffering a fatal injury—she broke two her ankles. How frickin’ sad. You lose the biggest race of your life and your life on the same day. Still, I’ve watched several sporting events in which the second place finisher should have been euthanized: Super Bowl XXX, the 1995 Cleveland Indians, 2006 Men’s U.S. Soccer team, the Dallas Mavericks, Bode Miller… any so called “professional athlete” who chokes in the big game. Only today, Eight Belles competed like a champion. Only three phillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby, while she’s not one of them she certainly raced her heart out. How sad indeed.
