I’ve been watching a lot of History Channel recently (old people like the History Channel; it gives us a chance to reminisce). A certain program I viewed dealt heavily with 12 thousand year old fossils. But Creationists (particularly Young Earth creationists) tell me that the earth is only 10,000 years old. Who am I to believe, the people of science or the people of faith? I believe them both, but not about the same things. I believe scientists when they tell me the age of the Earth and the Universe, and I believe people of faith when they tell me about faith and theology. I believe this schism between science and faith is illogical. Science and faith don’t cancel each other out—they support one another. The more science reveals about the universe, the more divine it becomes. As I grow older, learn more and become wiser, science and faith seem to ever increasingly complement one another. Maybe it’s because I need science to prove I belong in the Universe and faith to deal with the consequences.
