Bending

It hurts when I bend over. Say tying my shoes or picking up a fallen fry off the carpet. What is up with that? No one told me that as I grew older bending would be difficult. Bending! What’s next? Turning? Bobbing? Tilting?

When I bend over, especially for extended periods of time, my head, neck and shoulders ache and I grow dizzy. This is all a joke right? I just have a tape worm, or anthrax or a large growth on my sciatica, right? One of those is the real cause of my inability to bend over free of pain, right? Now, I do enjoy the intangible part of aging: the bitterness, the crankiness and overall disdain for life in all of its forms, but the physical limitations are not fun. Bending was one of my favorite things to do.

Strenuous

I was doing strenuous yard work the other day (for a friend, I would never have a house much less a yard) and I found myself drastically out of breath. It was very scary. I experienced the type of exertion that I normally felt after playing soccer or basketball—now after a few moves of the shovel. Also, when I lowered my neck, I could feel a slight pinch which I believed was cutting off oxygen to my brain. What a mess.
