Pessimism

Being Old during a down economy, like the one we are currently experiencing, means it’s time to be pessimistic. I must lament the banking industry, blame congress, scorn the President and curse the “predatory lenders.” Being Old means I must proclaim we’re going to lose our jobs by Monday, be forced to live in tents and rummaging through garbage cans for nourishment. “Hoard water! Buy cans of food! We’re all going to die!”

Of course it’s bad but not that bad. While the aforementioned parties deserve blame, the causes are immense and complicated. So is the solution. The economy is cyclical and American ingenuity always saves the day. That is why we need optimism, positive thinking and a good attitude. But, I’m Old so the hell to all that!

Indicators

The economy is slowing down. Of course if you watched the news you’d think we all need to pack up everything we own and run for the hills because we’re all going to die! Yes the economy can be better and it soon will be—the economy is always changing. Yet some people in our country, mainly the news media, want our economy to be bad—all the time. They will use any negative indicator they can find to scare people into believing they are about become dissolute. Only now the news media doesn’t have to look very hard to find those negative indicators.
