New Office

My roommate recently redecorated her office and it was all paid for by her employer. With her new office—her new work environment—she enjoys going to work more, works more efficiently and doesn’t mind staying late. Simply, her new office is positively affecting her production. Her situation reminds me of news stores—usually there’s one about every two weeks—about a study that claims “workers like flexible schedules” or “workers like clean and decorated work environments” or “workers are more productive with frequent short breaks.” I find those stories (studies) amazing. Who doesn’t know that? They present their obvious finding like they are some sort of revelation. It’s not a revelation: content cows give better milk. Who doesn’t think freedom, cleanliness and breaks for work make for better workers? Who really thinks the best way to treat employees is to treat them badly? Me. You go to work to work—enough said. Work supposed to suck, that’s why they call it work. If you want flexibly, decorations, and/or vacations don’t work at my factory.
